The zombies continue to be the least scary thing in these books. This book sees the return of a character from a previous volume and I'm very happy about it, they were, and continue to be, one of my favourites. Good to see Darren hasn't killed them off... Not yet anyway, this is a zombie apocalypse after all, not everyone is safe.
4.5 stars.
This was far more enjoyable than the previous volume in the series. Appropriate pace, and the hopping around to different POVs wasn't nearly as confusing as it has been.
Not a whole lot happens in this one, but you get some explanations for what's going on, which is nice. Although, admittedly, it was more like confirming what I already thought.
I'm just gonna put quotes here that I liked.
Imagine this. You're strolling through whatever the zombie equivalent of a "park on a nice day" is, having a good, reasonable, zombie-filled time, when you round a corner, and there's a horrific scene playing in front of you. And I mean horrific to someone who's become accustomed to zombies. That's how this book plays out. It's a joyful zombie experience for about two thirds of the book, and then you're slapped in the face with all the scary bad things. And Darren Shan does it all delightfully.
There is barely any plot in this novel, but it went from 0 to 100 real quick. Are people really like this in real life? Who enjoys being called "baby"? Also, Nan is a bit of an odd name for a girl considering people refer to their grandmothers as "Nan". Any, plotwise, this book was ridiculous, and curse it for being the first in a series because my curiosity about what could possibly happen next is making me want to read the next one.
Alcatraz is really good at rambling. And he's not a very good author. Or just maybe not a very nice person. He talks about all the things an author shouldn't do, and then proceeds to do all of them.
I felt no real attachment to any of the characters, but it was still sufficiently interesting that I will read the next novel.
